Ensure Points For The Demolition Works

In construction industry have a lot of demolition works hacking of concrete block and columns and beams. In perform a demolition works or hacking works you must use power tools or heavy equipment have to hack or break the concrete components. In this post we take look on the safety procedures of demolition works

Demolition works
  • Ensure the location are marked by the authorized persons to demolish
  • Ensure the risk assessment and safety work procedures are approved by the designated persons.
  • Ensure the entire worker whom involved in the demolition works is having sufficient trainings.
  • All are the heavy equipments and power tools are checked regularly and in good conditions.
  • All are the existing services like electric, water and gas terminated for the demolition.
  • Ensure all are the safety check list like permit to work, tools box meeting are completed before start demolition.
  • Ensure to have water spraying facilities for protect from dust
  • Ensure to have safe guard for hits from the debris.
  • Ensure to have ear plug for protect from heavy noise.
  • Ensure to have mask and respirators for protect from the dust for the workers
  • Ensure the Emergency assembles area supervisor first aider, fire fighter and all other safety personals are active.
  • Ensure to provide effective supervisions of the demolition area.
  • Ensure to barricade all around area for avoid public safety issues.
  • Ensure to provide proper signal or notice board to places on that area.
  • Ensure to arrange the transport to bring out the debris from the site.
  • Ensure to provide a traffic controller for deal with heavy equipment sand the transports.

7 Important steps for the Micro Piling

There are many reasons to consider recommending the deep foundation. Pile foundations are the types of deep foundations. Piling is one of the foundation methods in most of projects used construction industry. Few types of piling methods have under the section of pile foundation

One the famous piling method is Micro piling, which is in the complicated locations and tunnels.

Preparation

Contractor must prepare the method of statement and risk assessment and design mix calculation, manpower data, all the safety and legal checklist before sating the piling projects.

Pile Location

Piling equipment carefully mobilized in to the site and park. Ensure all the pile location points by the approved surveyor of the main contractor. If the contract mentions the make the location is done by sub contractor that means piling contractor should ensure the pile location by own surveyor based on the piling drawing.

Safety

All the worker must attended the in-house safety rules in the site and ensure they must understand the risk assessment. Ensure the entire check list for the safety site before start the piling process. Piling rig must drive on the safe access like sheet plat

Drive

Must ensure the pile qualities like pile vertical, pile length, pile size, temporary casing or permanent casing position. Especially the vertical of the pile must check every one meter depth that you drive. Before leave the location must check the depth and conform to the authorized personal. If once start the re bar installation then difficult to drill again. It is wasting of your time and energy.

Re bar installation

Steel re bar must be fabricate as the same time of boring. If you select that use the free fabricate materials then must ensure sufficient pieces have on site. Re bar must be inserting vertically and joints must fix properly. It’s very important for the quality of the pile. Grouting hose must insert with the re bar gauge.

Grouting

Wash properly to the boring hole through the grouting hose, when the water come out like clean water then you may stop and start to grout. Ensure the water cement ratio and chemical compounds for the setting process based on the design mix of the pile. When you pump the cement mix, maintain the steady flow and the mean time don’t forgot to take pull the grouting hose. During the grouting water may overflow from the boring hole as the same the cement come out like harder thick then you may conform with authorized person to stop the grouting

General Points

Must fallow the safety rules and use the personal productive equipment's at all the times. Spacer all placed and ties properly with the steel re bar gauge. Don’t forget to take the cube for the cube test to know the strength of grouting cement. Maintain the steady flow of the cement pump if not you may facing your pump may be chock.

Safe work practice - Electrical safety

Accidental contact with electrical equipment can have deadly consequences. Always refer to the manufacturer's recommended operating practices prior to using new electrical appliances, tools and equipment. Use the following guidelines to reduce the risk of personal injury.

All electrical tools and appliances will be double insulated or have a three prong plug-in.

Only qualified and authorized electricians are allowed to service and repair electrical appliances, tools and equipment.

Switch all tools OFF before connecting them to a power supply.

Do not bypass the on/off switch and operate the tools by connecting and disconnecting the power cord.

Prior to operating electrical powered tools and equipment, ensure that you are working on a dry surface.

Tools with damaged cords, grounds and housing units are to be tagged “Out of Service” and sent for repair.

Missing or damaged ground plugs of any appliance, tool or piece of equipment are to be repaired prior to use.

Damaged extension cords shall be tagged “Out of Service”, repaired or replaced as warranted.

Always stand to the side of a service box when resetting a breaker.

All electrical tools must be regularly checked and approved by authorized persons

Disconnect power tools from power source before making adjustments. Defective equipment needs to be tagged “Out of Service” and removed.

Tools with electrical arcing brushes should be removed when you feel any tingling during use.

Do not operate tools in an area containing explosive vapors or gases, unless they are intrinsically safe and only if you follow the manufacturer's guidelines.

Do not clean tools with flammable or toxic solvents.

Maintain a good housekeeping in work place and understand the fir aid procedure or call someone for assisted to you when have electrical crises

Cheers

Fire safety

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of US fires and explosions accounted for 3% of workplace fatalities in 2007. This leaf provides important reference equipment for avoidance of fire-related injuries in construction workplaces.

Fire safety becomes everyone's profession at a worksite. Employers are supposed to educate workers as regards fire hazards in the workplace and as regards what to do in a fire crisis. This plan should outline the coursework of key personnel in the event of a fire and provide an evacuation plan for workers on the site. In the construction industry, a "fire plan" should be set up prior to starting of any demolition job.

The following factors are lead to the fire accidents:
  • Lack of housekeeping and improper storage of explosive materials
  • The electric circuit, panels and other temporary circuits are having the poor maintenance.
  • Power tools, welding machine and generators are having the poor maintenance.
  • Workers habits that they want smoke everywhere.

Prevention measures:
  • Maintain the good housekeeping in the site.
  • Tidy up the flammable materials like timber and ply woods
  • Maintain the proper storage of the highly flammable materials like diesel, chemicals and oils.
  • Regularly check up all the machineries, electric and power tools to avoid explosion.
  • Proper maintenance of the electric circuits can be avoided the fire accidents.

General rules:
  • Educate the workers about the fire and fire safety and how act when fire crises have.
  • Properly maintain the and regularly check the validity of fire extinguishers.
  • Prepare the fire drill plan and demonstrate to the workers.

I hope this leaf can be help full for you act as safety manner when having the fire crises. Cheers.

Hierarchy of risk controls for working at height

Elimination

Elimination of hazards refers to the total removal of the hazards and hence effectively making all the identified possible accidents and ill health impossible. This is the permanent solution and shell be attempted in the first instance.

Substitution

This involves replacing the hazard by one that presents a lower risk.

Engineering Controls

Engineering controls are physical means that limit the hazard. These include structural changes to the work environment or work process or erecting barriers to prevent the worker from being exposed to the hazard.

Administrative Controls

Administrative controls are systems of work or work procedures that help to reduce the exposure of workers to the risk of falling. It is also a useful means to limit the frequency and duration of exposure of workers to hazard and the number of persons involved in the task.

Personal protection

Personal protective equipment (PPE) should be used only as a last resort, after all other control measures have been considered, or as a short term contingency during maintenance or repair or as an additional protective measure

Struck By Hazards - to be prevented

One of the most common caution for the fatal accidents in the construction industry is the STRUCK BY. In Construction its there are few ways of the accident happen by struck by. According to OSHA, Struck - by injuries accounted for 73 deaths in 2011, 78 deaths in 2012 or 10 to 12 percent of all construction related fatal accidents in 2011 and 2012 in USA

There are four types of struck by hazards and let see the two cautions

  • Struck by falling object
  • Struck by flying objects
  • Struck by a moving object
  • Struck by swinging object

Risk and Control Measure of the Struck - By Falling Object:

Risk:
  • Working or walking below the  elevated work surface may you struck by a falling object
  • Material and tools  being knocked off unprotected edges to a suspended load coming loose
  • Insecure or not tidy of materials at the edges of the building

Control  Measure:
  • To be avoided the elevated work surface and walking in the overhead shelter area
  • Provide a sufficient height of the toe board to avoid materials and tools falling from height
  • Maintain the good housekeeping at the edge of the building and tidy up the materials properly

Risk and Control Measure of the Struck - By Flying Object:

Risk:
  • Tools and materials to be flying and struck when out of the controls
  • Nail gun discharge or tip flying of a saw blade can be struck by the falling object
  • Air pressurized above 30 psi can drive the oil to the skin or eyes

Control  Measure:

  • Power tools must be checked clearly before start to use
  • Wearing a safety glasses or a face shield when work with power tools
  • Should be clear of the line of sight when work with a nail gun and do not work opposite side with such power tools and other hand equipments and pressure machine

Falling from heights in construction - to be prevented

According to British workplace accident investigations fall is the biggest causes of fatal accidents with 34 of the 72 worker deaths in construction in 2007/2008. The main cause of the fatal accident in construction in Singapore is falling from heights, which is getting 34% contributed in the workplace fatal accidents in the period of 2002 to 2006. The World Health Organization stated that approximately 540,000 people die from falls in the year of 2010. Hence the No 1 killer in the workplace, particularly in construction is falling from height. If we prevent falls from heights we can save a lot  of valuable human lives.

The main key factors for the fall prevention's:

  •    Fall prevention policy
  •    Roles and Responsibilities of authorized persons
  •    Identify the risk and control measure

Fall Prevention Policy:

Commitment in prevention of injury to persons from incidents of falling from a height through height hazards. This policy must be communicated to all personnel who involved in the projects

Roles and Responsibilities:

Must ensure do their job for each and every person who involving in the projects like top management, safety personals, site personals and workers

Identify the Risk and Control Measure:

Identify the risk at work at heights and reduce risk level to the acceptable level by the effective control measure like using proper safety equipment when working at heights
