One of
the most common caution for the fatal accidents in the construction industry is
the STRUCK BY. In Construction its there are few ways of the accident happen by
struck by. According to OSHA, Struck - by injuries accounted for 73 deaths in
2011, 78 deaths in 2012 or 10 to 12 percent of all construction related fatal
accidents in 2011 and 2012 in USA
There are four types of
struck by hazards and let see the two cautions
- Struck by falling object
- Struck by flying objects
- Struck by a moving object
- Struck by swinging object
Risk and Control Measure
of the Struck - By Falling Object:
Risk:
- Working or walking below the elevated
work surface may you struck by a falling object
- Material and tools being knocked off
unprotected edges to a suspended load coming loose
- Insecure or not tidy of materials at the edges
of the building
Control Measure:
- To be avoided the elevated work surface and
walking in the overhead shelter area
- Provide a sufficient height of the toe board
to avoid materials and tools falling from height
- Maintain the good housekeeping at the edge of
the building and tidy up the materials properly
Risk and Control Measure
of the Struck - By Flying Object:
Risk:
- Tools and materials to be flying and struck
when out of the controls
- Nail gun discharge or tip flying of a saw
blade can be struck by the falling object
- Air pressurized above 30 psi can drive the oil
to the skin or eyes
Control Measure:
- Power tools must be checked clearly before
start to use
- Wearing a safety glasses or a face shield when
work with power tools
- Should be clear of the line of sight when work
with a nail gun and do not work opposite side with such power tools and
other hand equipments and pressure machine
